In his writings on the Eucharist, Martin Luther held that the Eucharist is ‘testament’ (Lt. testamentum), from Gk. diathḗkē. This, Luther took from the institution narrative, where Christ says (in Luther’s rendition from his Small Catechism), “Take, and drink of it, all of you. This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
